PECTORALIS MAJOR MUSCLE FUNCTION

The body’s normal response to the presence of a silicone implant is to form scar tissue (periprosthetic capsule) around it, which may sometimes thicken, harden or contract over time, creating a blemish.

Reconstruction techniques with implants keep this occurrence into consideration. Up to a few years ago – and still today in some cases – the implant and its blemish (if any) were hidden under the previously lifted pectoralis major muscle.

However, once the muscle is detached from the ribs, it’s no longer the same and may affect normal arm movement.

Sometimes, there can be rippling on the breast due to the changed muscle physiology. Plastic surgery can help solve these blemishes.
