BIOLOGICAL MATRICES: WHAT ARE THEY?
Informative material about breast reconstruction procedures after breast cancer
Collagen, skin’s best friend
In breast reconstruction with under muscle implant, the pectoralis major muscle isn’t always big enough to conceal the entire silicone implant, so the lower pole remains uncovered and in direct contact with the subcutaneous tissue. In such cases, this portion can be covered using biological matrices, i.e. soft collagen sheets placed between the silicone and the subcutaneous tissue, thereby preventing capsule formation.
The majority of these membranes are derived from animal skin, which is treated to remove the entire cellular component. What remains is a sheet of soft collagen similar to the one in the human body, which, unlike synthetic materials, quickly integrates into the body and becomes healthy, vital tissue
